NEAC Annual Report for 2005

This is the fourth annual report of the National Ethics Advisory Committee (NEAC). The report sets out NEAC’s activities and summarises its advice on the matters referred
to it under section 16 of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000.

NEAC is an independent advisor to the Minister of Health on ethical issues of national significance concerning health and disability matters. The committee’s formal statutory name is the National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability Support Services Ethics. It is also known by its Māori name, Kāhui Matatika o te Motu.

NEAC’s statutory functions are to:
  • advise the Minister of Health on ethical issues of national significance in respect of any health and disability matters (including research and services)
  • determine nationally consistent ethical standards across the health sector
  • scrutinise national health research and health services.
NEAC works within the context of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000 and the key strategy statements for the health sector.
